Thomas Hobbes’ lifework was to develop a scientific philosophy of government. In doing so, he confronted three challenges of his epoch: in terms of method, the ideal of mathematical proof; in terms of politics, the bloody reality of war and civil war; and in terms of morality, the evanescence of common convictions.
